Wildcats in England disappeared in the south during the 16th century, and were lost from north England and Wales by 1880, hunting and habitat loss, was the biggest problem. Wildcats reintroduced to English woodlands for the first time in 200 years, wildcat is one of the UK rarest and most endangered mammals, restricted to small parts of the Scottish Highlands, feeding on ground-nesting birds and rabbits in woodlands and on moorland.
